Katherine Rundell’s A Carnival of Animals is imaginative, witty and full of curiosity. The book combines beautifully observed reflections on animals with a sense of wonder that makes it engaging for both younger readers and adults. Rundell writes with intelligence and warmth, moving easily between humour, science and storytelling. It feels both playful and thoughtful, encouraging readers to look more closely at the natural world and the extraordinary creatures that share it with us.

What makes the book especially appealing is the way it sparks conversation and curiosity long after each chapter has ended. Every animal is introduced with vivid detail and fascinating facts that are memorable and accessible, making it ideal for reading aloud or sharing in small groups.

The writing invites readers to pause, imagine and reflect, helping the reader develop a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the importance of protecting endangered species. Teachers may also find it a valuable starting point for cross-curricular learning, inspiring activities linked to literacy, science and the environment.

It’s also been turned into a Radio 4 audio series that is available on BBC Sounds. Each of the 20 endangered species is captured beautifully in a short vignette of around 4 minutes. You could try playing each episode one by one, over a period of time, either in the classroom or, even better, in your outdoor classroom to provide great context. Katherine Rundell’s narration of her own wonderful prose is calm, soothing and will definitely appeal to children of all ages.
